Editorial fundada en 1939 por August Derleth y Donald Wandrei.
Soon after Lovecraft’s death, Derleth received a letter from Wandrei with news of the death of Lovecraft on March 15, 1937. In the afternoon of receipt of the letter, Derleth wrote Wandrei “that something should be done to keep Lovecraft’s work in print”. The two young writers later agreed that collecting the stories was not enough; they needed to be published. They did so and passed along the manuscript to Derleth’s then publisher, Charles Scribner’s Sons, which rejected the idea. Thus, Arkham House was born.
La primera recopilación de la obra de Lovecraft fue publicada por Arkham House en 1939, bajo el título de The Outsider and Others; en ella se recogían sus obras más importantes, con la única excepción de The Case of Carles Dexter Ward, que se incluiría en el segundo compendio de su obra, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, publicado en 1943. A éste siguieron Marginalia (1944), The Lurker at the Threshold (1945), Something about Cats and Other Pieces (1949), The Survivor and Others (1957), The Shuttered Room and Other Pieces (1959), Collected Poems (1963).

Necesito de vuestra sabiduría, todos sabemos que en las primeras ediciones del juego de rol Call of Cthulhu se daba las gracias a esta editorial (creada por Derleth tras la muerte de Lovecraft) porque se suponía que estos poseían los derechos de la obra de HPL, sin embargo estos agradecimientos desaparecerían en un momento dado para nunca volver y pasar a considerarse la obra de Lovecraft libre de derechos de autor, ¿cuando y porqué pasó esto? Es que me suena que sería a los 65 años de la muerte del autor pero solo en caso de que nadie hubiera reclamado esos derechos formalmente, ¿fue algún rollo legal?
